Summary of 2006 Event
The sun was shining, the snow conditions and the pistes were at their best – what more could the Wild Girls want! The 7th Wild Girls on Snow raised over CHF 50,000.- for Breast Cancer Haven in the UK and the International Breast Cancer Study Group based in Switzerland.
The event opened with ‘Jump for Breast Cancer’ on the Selfranga and the evening ended with a big party in the Casa Antica! On Sunday the teams, guided by their ‘local’, skied on the Parsenn and faced various challenges based on the ‘Pink & Booby’ theme of Breast Cancer! The challenges were to milk a cow which was strategically placed on the terrace at the Höhenweg Restaurant – it was highly entertaining and drew a slightly bemused audience! At the Weissfluhjoch Restaurant the teams all had to blow the Alphorn, which, if you have not done before is certainly not very easy – though Thomas Kollegger makes it look a cinch by standing on his head blowing the horn in perfect harmony! The next challenge at the Parsennhütte was with William Tell - though there was not a young boy with an apple on his head to aim at! William Tell was an awesome shot with the crossbow and was a wonderful sight on the mountain in his traditional dress. The final challenge was compiled by Angus Deayton and his questions certainly got the brains working - no doubt aided by some liquid refreshments over lunch on the mountain!
One of the highlights of the event was the Sunday evening with Anton Mosimann who masterminded a cheese fondue challenge at the Hotel Silvretta. Anton, world renowned for his culinary career, came to the very first Wild Girls on Snow event and it was wonderful to have him back again in Klosters this year. The Silvretta was beautifully decked out in pink and the evening was one of laughter and fun with all the teams cooking their own fondue.
Traditional Swiss music was provided by a local trio ‘Echo von Horä’ and brilliant magician Paul Lytton had a spellbound audience with his magic skills. Comedian Bobby Davro conducted the game ‘Heads ‘n Tails’ though I am not sure the Swiss people present understood his fast talking gags! The prize for Heads ‘n Tails was a stunning Graham of London Oxford Watch kindly donated by The British Masters which the winner generously gave back to be auctioned the next day.
On Monday morning the teams were up on Madrisa Mountain for the Wild Girls on Snow GS Challenge. Each team had a ski racer to lead them and the FIS piste had been beautifully groomed for the occasion. All the teams completed two runs with the aim being to get your timing on the second run as close as close as possible to your first run. Dirk Wiedmann managed to achieve an identical time which was amazing and Claudia Schimhofer very nearly too with 0.01 difference! The winning team was the Meaume Skiers with a total diffence of 3.40. A delicious lunch was held halfway through the race on the sunny balcony of the BergRestaurant Saaseralp and at the end of the afternoon the teams skied back down to Klosters.
The Gala dinner was held that evening in the Hotel Vereina which had been beautifully decorated with great swathes of pink bows and balloons. Following a delicious dinner Ralph Krueger conducted a brilliant auction raising nearly CHF 32,000 for breast cancer. After the prize giving, the event closed with a memorable performance of a ‘swingin’ tribute to Sinatra by Bobby Davro and Kenny Lynch – what a tremendous ending to a very successful Wild Girls on Snow 2006!
The success of the event would not have been possible without the support from many individuals and companies who gave such generous prizes, donations and items for the auction – a HUGE thank you to everyone who contributed and to all the Wild Girls (and boys!) who took part. Finally, an extra special thank you to the main sponsor Ivo Romer and Fidustra SA – your support was greatly appreciated.
